Cop Gets Frantic Call about Dog Thrown in Snowbank. He's Shot in Head and Wagging Tail Like Crazy
You have to be a special type of cruel to willingly hurt an animal of any kind. I think that’s something everybody can agree on.
On Jan. 11, a man pulled over on the side of the road in Iron River, MI to examine what he thought was a dead dog. It was black and white, and he had a broken leg and a bullet wound in his head.
But when this brave dog picked up his head and looked at his savior, the unnamed man was surprised to see him move.
He called his wife and she stayed with the dog until authorities arrived.
When they finally did, Trooper Weesner and Deputy Schiavo took him to Four Seasons Animal Hospital and called Northwoods Animal Shelter, where Sarah Erickson picked up.
The way the deputy was describing the dog, she thought he was referring to a dead animal rather than a live one.
But she stopped suddenly when he said, “He just keeps wagging his tail like crazy.” That was unexpected.
While police were working investigating who hurt him, Northwoods staff was working on getting him care. They decided to name him Sarge and determined he was probably about a year old.
At the Four Seasons Animal Hospital, they were able to stabilize him and treat him for hypothermia.
They could probably save his leg if they got him to the right people, so they started talking about moving him to University of Wisconsin Madison Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
They guess that he “had been shot and dumped near the road around midnight, surviving hours in the below-freezing temperatures.” They also suspect he dragged his 40-pound body into the middle of the road, trying to find some kind of help or safety.
Once moved to UW, doctors started getting his broken leg in order. Using plates and screws, this endlessly happy pup will be able to keep his leg.
The bullet, however, has to stay put for now; it’s “lodged where his neck meets his chest cavity.” Removing it is far too dangerous when it’s so close to his spine.
The students and staff all fell in love with this miracle dog. Sarge is out of surgery and on his way back to the upper peninsula of Michigan.
On Jan. 17, the Northwoods Animal Shelter hit their fundraising goal (and have even exceeded it) to pay for Sarge’s surgery and care.
Hopefully this sweet boy makes a quick, easy recovery and finds his forever home!
