Police Investigating After Ravens Rookie Hospitalized With Head Injuries

Ravens rookie kicker Kaare Vedvik was found injured in Baltimore early Saturday morning and hospitalized with head injuries.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, at around 4 a.m. Saturday the Baltimore Fire Department requested police in reference to an injured person. Officers arrived and found Vedvik suffereing from “upper body injuries.”

He was then taken to a local hospital for treatment of what are considered non life-threatening injuries. The police do not yet know how the injuries occurred but they are actively investigating the situation.

The Ravens acknowledged that Vedvik was injured and then subsequently moved him off the active roster.

According to the Baltimore Sun, two law enforcement officials said Vedvik had injuries consistent with being assaulted but they were still gathering more information.

WJZ-FM in Baltimore added a few more details to the story, including the fact Vedvik teeth knocked out.

Vedvik wasn’t expected to win the Ravens kicking job as Justin Tucker was an All-Pro last season. But he was impressive in preseason as the team’s backup kicker and punter.

The rookie from Marshall made eight of nine field goal attempts in the preseason, including a 56-yarder in the preseason finale.

His eight made field goals were the third most of any player this preseason. He also punted 19 times in relief of former Pro Bowler Sam Koch.

Before being placed on the non-football injury list, teams were prepared to make a run at Vedvik in the event he was cut by the Ravens.

Teams are watching Baltimore’s kicker situation closely to see what Ravens do with undrafted free agent Kaare Vedvik, a kicker and punter who has impressed at camp. Vedvik has been more impressive than Will Lutz was with Ravens last summer, before he landed a job with Saints.

Vedvik’s situation is somewhat similar to that of Sergio Kindle, a former Raven who suffered a head injury as a rookie.

After being a second-round pick in 2010, Kindle fell down a flight of stairs just days before his first training camp. He suffered a fractured skull and was placed on the Ravens’ reserve/non-football injury list.

Kindle was not activated off the list and missed his entire rookie season. He played a total of three NFL games and made one tackle in his career.
