LaVar Ball on verge of signing first NBA player that's not his son

Share

The Big Baller Brand is about to get even bigger.

The apparel company started by LaVar Ball has made headlines over the past year despite none of its endorsers coming from outside of his own family.

But that could change shortly, as Yahoo Sports reported Sunday that New Orleans Pelicans guard Jordan Crawford is in talks with the company for a partnership deal.

According to Yahoo’s Shams Charania, the company plans on sending Crawford new merchandise to wear throughout the playoffs. He already wore some of the shoes earlier this season, making him the first player outside of Lonzo Ball to rock the BBB in a game.

Unlike the agreements most other top shoe brands have with players, this deal wouldn’t be exclusive. Crawford would sign a contract with the brand but still have the freedom to “pursue his own personal endeavors,” Charania wrote.

That likely means he could still wear the merchandise of other brands or even pursue a deal with another brand.

After Crawford wore Lonzo’s ZO2 Prime Remix shoes earlier this season, he explained why he hopped on board the Big Baller Brand train.

“The support. Supporting them. I think it’s a great movement,” Crawford said. “(Lavar) is a character, but at the same time, he has a great plan together. So it was just about support really.”

Would you ever buy Big Baller Brand shoes?

Crawford actually bought the shoes back in May 2017, but ended up being waived by the Pelicans several months later.

He then spent six months on the sideline before being re-signed by the Pelicans earlier this month.

Crawford seems like an odd player for LaVar Ball to go into business with, as he’s neither an established star nor an up-and-coming player. Rather, he’s a 29-year-old journeyman who needed a 10-day contract in order to get back into the NBA.

But any NBA fan who knows about Crawford also knows about what he’s most famous for. When he was still in college, Crawford went viral by dunking on LeBron James during a pickup game at a camp sponsored by Nike.

Amateur videos of the dunk were then confiscated by Nike at James’ request, and the company later claimed it had a policy of no videotaping at the camp.

We all know about the beef between LaVar Ball and James, so maybe this is LaVar working his magic to poke at the King once again.
