Suspended NFL star reportedly in rehab after police search for him
Troubled NFL lineman Aldon Smith was being sought by police in San Francisco after he was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident Saturday night.
San Francisco police said Smith “fled the scene” of a location where officers had responded to a domestic violence complaint.
TMZ Sports reported that Smith checked into a rehab facility immediately after the alleged incident.
“The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” according to a police statement provided to the San Jose Mercury-News. “The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival and was identified as professional football player Aldon Smith, a 28-year-old Oakland resident.”

Prior to the police arriving, a caller who claimed to be the victim in the incident told authorities Smith bit her wrists and climbed out her window, possibly fleeing in a black Range Rover.
According to the report by TMZ, Smith’s fiancée was the woman who was involved in the alleged domestic violence incident Saturday. She said her parents were the ones who took Smith to a rehab facility.
“I can tell you this … Aldon called my parents and asked them to take him to rehab,” she told TMZ.
“He complied. They went and got him. I was not there. My family took him and had him checked in,” she added.
Smith and the woman became engaged last month. The couple had only been dating for about four months.
The woman said she is scared for Smith’s life because of his addiction.
“I wish the best for Aldon,” she told TMZ. “And I’m scared for his life with his addiction. I cannot comment on the altercation but I can tell you I love him and so happy he turned to my family who considers him family and hopefully he gets the help he truly needs.”
Smith has been suspended from the NFL since November 2015 because he violated the league’s substance-abuse police. At the time, he was a member of the Oakland Raiders.
Smith has had several run-ins with the law since being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft.
“Smith was arrested and charged with DUI again after a car crash in September 2013. He voluntarily entered rehab and missed five games that season,” ESPN reported. “In July 2014, Smith was sentenced to 11 days of work release for that DUI and was later suspended nine games by the NFL for the incident.”
He was released by the 49ers in August 2015, just hours after he was arrested on another charge of DUI, hit-and-run and vandalism. He ended up serving 20 days in jail for that incident.
Smith was signed by the Raiders and played nine games for them in 2015.
Smith, who unsuccessfully applied for reinstatement to the league in 2016, was also the subject of a domestic violence investigation in February of last year. No charges were ever brought in that incident.
His contract with the Raiders expired after last season.
