Tim Tebow injured in freak accident
It’s not easy being a New York Mets fan.
The perpetually underachieving Mets haven’t won a World Series since 1986, a fact that the big brother Yankees are all too eager to remind them of.
That being said, Mets fans were treated to the usual agonizing injury news on Sunday, albeit this time, the season hasn’t even officially started. Based on the injury reports surfacing from Mets camp, fans would think the team was in the middle of the season, not the very beginning.
The biggest household name to be injured? That’s easily Tim Tebow. And it wasn’t the most glamorous of injuries, either.
Tebow wasn’t swinging for the fences or attempting a heroic dive for a ball. Rather, he injured his ankle in a freak accident involving a sprinkler head, per the New York Post’s Mike Puma.
The ankle sprain was bad enough that it’s being monitored daily.
“I’m trying to be smart about it and keep (the ankle) taped,” Tebow said after Sunday workouts, according to the Post.
Tebow should be thankful the injury isn’t significantly worse. Yankees legend Mickey Mantle missed most of the 1951 World Series after he injured his knee tripping over a sprinkler head.
The Mets had better hope that the overhauled medical staff comes through. The team fired its medical staff after the disastrous 2017 season was completely derailed by endless injuries.
The new-look medical staff will now probably have to work overtime as injuries are already mounting for the Mets.
Aside from Tebow, talented first baseman prospect Dominic Smith is on the injury list with a quadriceps injury. An MRI for Smith is scheduled for Monday.
It’s been a rough sophomore year for Smith. After a disappointing rookie season, Smith dropped 30 pounds to get in better shape. Unfortunately, he still missed the start of the Grapefruit League as he was a healthy scratch after showing up late for a team meeting.
Along with Smith, center fielder Juan Lagares and veteran Jay Bruce are both battling injury as well.
Lagares is dealing with a strained left hamstring. The 28-year old hit .250/.296/.365 while dealing with numerous injuries in 2017.
Bruce, meanwhile, is dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. The veteran is expecting to play the outfield for the Mets in 2018 after signing a three-year, $39 million contract in the offseason.
The Mets open up the 2018 regular season with a home series against the St. Louis Cardinals that begins on March 29.
