6-Year-Old Shelter Dog Helps Rescue Young Cat Trapped in Sewer

Share

Not all heroes wear capes — and some even come in the form of our furry friends.

Take the 6-year-old Shar-Pei named Leopard, a rescue dog who was living at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter in Ohio in November of 2016.

While out on a walk with Freida Feher, one of the shelter’s volunteers, Leopard suddenly stopped beside a sewer grate and laid down.

Freida tried to get Leopard to move, but she wouldn’t budge.

That’s when she bent over to see what the dog was trying to show her.

Moments later, Freida heard faint cries coming from inside the sewer and noticed a tiny gray cat stuck inside.

“She just layed by the sewer grate and wouldn’t budge, then i heard a faint meow.. [sic]” Freida wrote on the shelter’s Facebook post. “Leopard wouldnt move,,what a Hero… [sic]”

Thankfully, volunteers and deputies were able to quickly rescue the cat and bring her to stay at the shelter.

“Had Leopard not alerted us that something was going [on] with the sewer, we may not have known the cat was even in there. Leopard is a hero,” said Mindy Naticchioni, an administrator at the shelter.

Leopard had been living in the shelter for over 6 months when she rescued her kitten friend.

The cat soon went home to live with one of the shelter’s volunteers. But because Leopard was recovering from a cancerous tumor, it was difficult for the shelter to find her a family willing to care for her needs.

“She certainly deserves it,” Naticchioni said, hoping that a family might realize how special Leopard truly was.
