Watch Elderly Couple's Faces When They Realize Son Turned His Basement into Their New Home

Share

There comes a time when your parents are getting older and decisions have to be made about what kind of living arrangements are best for them.

It’s different for each person, as some people are battling health issues early on while others are able-bodied and able-minded until they pass away.

Not everyone has caring family nearby to help them, either, but those who do are blessed.

Bonnie and George Miller are both 87, and have a caring son who’s looking out for them.

Bonnie has started to lose her physical health, and George has started to lose his mental health. It became clear to their son, Schon, that they were going to need a little extra help to live well.

Schon and his wife, Jeannie, went through their options. Putting his parents in a nursing home felt wrong, and they had to stay together.

The Millers live in Bremen, Ohio, and decided to look for a house with an extra living area, like a private little attached apartment or detached building with all the amenities a small house would provide.

Though they searched for a property, nothing turned up. So they took a good, hard look at their own home, and came up with a solution.

Their house had a recreation room in the basement. It was dark and brooding, had a pool table and karaoke setup and was just the right size to turn into a functional living area for George and Bonnie.

“Making room for in law suite,” the couple posted on their joint Facebook account on Nov. 11, listing all their rec room contents for sale. “Must go in a week. Message me for pickup arrangements.”

After clearing out the space, they added a new external entrance, lightened everything up with bright paint, and added a kitchenette and handicap-accessible bathroom.

“We had been talking about it with mum for a while because we knew they were leaning on each other with one good body and one good mind,” Schon told The Daily Mail.

“One can’t live alone without the other and we didn’t want either one to end up in a nursing home.”

“When mum broke her shoulder falling, we started looking for a house that already had a finished mother-in-law suite.”

“But when we couldn’t find anything, we decided to blow a hole in the basement wall, get rid of our fun stuff like the pool table, instruments, and karaoke area and move them in so we could take care of them,” he concluded.

Once they were done, all that was left was to gift their parents with the new space. To say the elderly couple was surprised and thankful would be an understatement.

The video shows Bonnie crying profusely, she and her husband both thanking their son and his wife for all they’d done.

Now they not only have a beautiful, functional space to live out their days comfortably, but they’ll be living with family, too.
